Multiple wildfires burning across Oklahoma, Wichita Mountains: See map of wildfires

Parts of Oklahoma’s beloved Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is on fire after several days of burn bans and warnings that fires could break out in Oklahoma.

Discovered Thursday around 3 p.m., the grass fire in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has burned areas as far south as the Holy City and as far north as the Mountain Village neighborhood, heading north towards Meers.

Residents of Mountain Village and Mountain Sheridan Estates were evacuated Thursday, according to Comanche County and Lawton Emergency Management .

All areas east of the Visitor Center are closed, the refuge posted on Facebook Friday morning. The closure includes the Holy City, Rush Lake, Jed Johnson Lake, Mt. Scott and Lake Elmer Thomas.

As of Friday morning, the fire had burned about 1,500 acres.
