Opinion: Oklahoma is conservative but must prioritize solutions to poor national rankings

The dust has settled, the ballots have been counted, and Oklahoma remains a stronghold of conservative politics. This outcome invites a moment for us all, regardless of political affiliation, to reflect on the priorities and policies that will shape our state’s future.

Oklahoma consistently ranks among the lowest in critical areas: health care access, education quality and mental health services. Our state’s position in national rankings in these areas raises questions about the policies and approaches we are adopting. As we consider the next steps forward, it’s essential to focus on solutions that prioritize the health, education and economic stability of all Oklahomans.

For some, the election results serve as a reaffirmation of Oklahoma’s conservative principles. For others, they signal a need to advocate for policies that address systemic issues affecting the state’s most pressing needs. Oklahoma is rooted in a history of conservatism, and it’s important to respect our state’s values of independence and self-reliance. But I believe we’ve reached a point where holding onto these ideals doesn’t mean we have to forgo the benefits of smart, evidence-based policies that prioritize the well-being of all Oklahomans. We are in the midst of an education crisis, with teacher shortages and underfunded schools. We have a mental health system that is under-resourced and stretched to its limits. Yet, each election passes without a significant mandate to address these foundational issues.
