Preparing for “The Big One,” earthquake researchers recognize 324th anniversary of the last Cascadia earthquake

EUGENE, Ore. – January 26, 2024 marks the 324th anniversary of the last Cascadia earthquake that shook the Pacific Northwest at a magnitude between 8.7 and 9.2. According to Douglas Toomey, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon, Cascadia earthquakes are unpredictable, as the repeat times of earthquakes along the Cascadia varies anywhere from a couple hundred years to a thousand.
