In an unexpected and groundbreaking decision, the Oregon Supreme Court has barred ten Republican state senators from seeking re-election in 2024 and 2026. This ruling follows the longest walkout in state history, which lasted six weeks and resulted in the stalling of hundreds of bills.

Last year, these senators staged a walkout aimed at delaying the passage of bills that would provide “gender-affirming care” to minors and abortion access to minors. Their boycott was the longest in state history, effectively paralyzing the legislative session for approximately six weeks.

In response to this unprecedented action, Democratic Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade made the decision to bar these lawmakers from seeking re-election under Measure 113. This measure, passed by voters last year, amended the state constitution to prevent lawmakers from appearing on the ballot if they have more than ten unexcused absences.
