Officials spearheading Oregon drug recriminalization could learn a lot from Washington

Perhaps this sounds familiar. In 2021, lawmakers in Washington state were looking for a way to reintroduce criminal penalties for drug possession. The politicians didn’t want to revert to a destructive drug war. So they designed a system where, yes, offenders could be arrested and charged for possessing drugs – but maybe they wouldn’t have to be. The new law carved out a path for police to steer users toward social services rather than taking them to jail.
