Editorial endorsement November 2024: Vote ‘no’ on Measure 117’s premature adoption of ranked choice

A measure referred to the November ballot by legislators asks voters if they want Oregon to adopt a “ranked-choice voting” system for choosing candidates in select federal and state offices. The system, in which voters can rank multiple candidates instead of picking just one, is billed as more representative by ensuring winners have a majority of voters’ support, even if they weren’t a voter’s first choice. Maine and Alaska have both adopted ranked-choice voting in federal and state races, and Oregon is one of several states voting this year on whether to adopt similar systems.
