PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Nature will flaunt its power this weekend as the first of several seasonal king tides will flood coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest on Nov. 15, 16 and 17,
The tides will coincide with stormy weekend weather, making for hazardous beach conditions. A high surf advisory is in effect Tuesday, with 22 to 28-foot waves slamming the Oregon Coast. Although the high surf is forecast to diminish on Wednesday, the incoming king tides and stormy weather will keep beaches swamped through the weekend.
“While unrelated to the current series of weather disturbance, the perigean spring tides, also known as king tides, will begin Friday, Nov. 15, increasing high tides,” Portland’s National Weather Service office stated in Tuesday’s forecast. “A strong weather system on Wednesday will bring the possibility of tidal overflow and minor coastal flooding during high tide late Wednesday morning.”
Possible tornado touchdown on the Oregon Coast Monday night
While dangerous beach conditions are expected in Oregon, Washington and Northern California, there are plenty of elevated lookouts that offer safer views of powerful ocean swells. With help from Oregon State Parks, KOIN 6 has compiled a list of lookouts in Oregon and Southwest Washington where beachgoers can watch the surging king tides from a safe distance.
