EUGENE, Ore. – A major environmental change is coming to Oregon, as a bill passed with bipartisan support in 2023 is banning the use of Styrofoam food containers. Starting January 1, 2025, Senate Bill 543 officially goes into effect. The law, passed with bipartisan support in April of 2023, bans the sale and distribution of Styrofoam food containers and cups across the state of Oregon. The law aims to reduce plastic waste and protect wildlife. Environmental advocates are celebrating the move. Meanwhile local business owners aren’t enthused by the cost, but understand the positive environmental effects the switch will have.
