Bird flu and salmonella-contaminated cat food are affecting indoor felines

An indoor cat died from bird flu

Indoor pets are assumed to be free from the dangers of those living outside, but this is not always the case. The death of an indoor cat in Oregon has been confirmed to be a result of bird flu from contaminated pet food from Northwest Naturals which is sold in Virginia.

The company issued a voluntary recall for a batch of its products, and at this time, there have been no reports of any cats in the Commonwealth being affected. There is a possible risk for salmonella contamination for Virginia pets and their owners.

Virginia pets at risk for salmonella

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled 1,350 pounds of Blue Ridge Beef Kitten mix sold in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York due to salmonella contamination.

Pet owners should thoroughly wash their hands after touching pet food or any surfaces it was on to prevent being infected.
