Lawmaker looks to end Sunday hunting ban in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Sunday hunting ban in Pennsylvania could be a thing of the past if one lawmaker gets their way.

PA Rep. Mandy Steele (D-Allegheny County) sent out a memo to the PA House of Representatives on Tuesday, Jan. 30, looking for co-sponsorship to do away with the Sunday hunting prohibition once and for all.

In the memo , Steele said that Hunters are the original conservationists, committed to protecting nature and have an understanding of balancing our wildlife populations.

In 2019, Act 107 was passed. This act allowed the Pennsylvania Game Commission to designate three Sundays per year where residents could partake in hunting and fur taking. Steele pointed out that these three Sundays have been successful since their inception in 2020.

Even though the act was passed, the Game Commission has limited authority over Sunday hunting despite their governance over other aspects of hunting.

Steele went on to point out that some states have recently lifted their Sunday hunting bans altogether and haven’t reported any adverse impacts on their game populations.
