Boost in Pennsylvania’s autism disability funding applauded by local institute

Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget is being applauded by a local advocate for people with intellectual disabilities.

Robert Barber, senior vice president of the Barber National Institute, said the proposed 12% increase in funding for people with disabilities, including autism, is welcome news.

The Barber Institution said it’s an area that’s been underfunded for decades.

“That’s really illustrated by the ever-growing waiting list. The governor’s proposal is a positive first step towards getting every IDA family the services they need and deserve to have,” Barber said.

He added that 13,000 people with intellectual disabilities and autism in Pennsylvania are currently awaiting services.
