HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM)- In his budget address, Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed 1.9 million dollars to establish a division of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia within the Department of Aging. If created, it would be the first of its kind in Pennsylvania.
“This division would start looking at how does the Commonwealth addresses Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, how do we do it putting people first so that we’re dementia capable of providing better quality care and more coordinated care across the spectrum,” said Clay Jacobs, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter.
Quality care is personal for Marlon Martin. He took on the role of caregiver for his parents.
“My father, in 1997, was diagnosed with dementia which then led to Alzheimer’s,” said Martin.

Martin says getting access to care wasn’t always easy.
“My mom just passed away in April, and she was dealing with dementia and I’m working a full-time job, had to move in with her, still had a family but move in with my mom to take care of her,” said Martin.
