Dept. of Conservation warns Pennsylvanians of increased wildfire risk due to dry conditions

(WHTM) — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is cautioning Pennsylvanians of the increased risk of wildfires due to the upcoming dry season.

According to the DCNR, while Pennsylvania endured heavy rain and flooding from summer hurricanes, recent dry conditions, combined with sunny days, unseasonably warm temperatures, and low humidity, have heightened wildfire risk.

The DCNR says human activity causes 99% of wildfires in Pennsylvania, destroying thousands of acres of state and private woodlands yearly.

Wildfires require specific conditions to ignite:

  • An available fuel source, like dried grass or leaves
  • Dry conditions, including low relative humidity
  • An ignition source – a way for the fire to start

DCNR advises that anyone lighting fires at home or campsites should keep combustible items at least 10 feet away, and keep a rake or shovel, along with water, readily available to fully extinguish embers. Officials also recommend checking the DCNR’s website for elevated fire risk alerts.
