Pennsylvania Game Commission investigating Avian influenza cases

(WHTM) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission is continuing to investigate Avian influenza in Southeastern Pennsylvania after nearly 200 birds were found dead in the greater Allentown area last week.

On Dec. 30, 2024, around 200 snow geese were found dead in Nazareth Township in Northampton County and Upper Macungie Township in Lehigh County. In-state testing of the birds indicated Avian influenza as the cause.

The Game Commission has partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to address and limit Avian Influenza in Pennsylvania.

According to the Game Commission, trained teams are working to remove dead birds and euthanize sick birds because recovery is unlikely.

Geese frequently move throughout the year, so teams are working to test species most susceptible to Avian Influenza in different areas across the state to monitor possible outbreaks, per the Game Commission.
