What can we expect for the rest of winter?

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — From heavy rain and snow to significant flooding , January has been a very wet month in Southern New England, and the area has also seen some wild temperature swings.

An active storm pattern has had a grip on the region as the jet stream was set up overhead, bringing storm after storm.

January, so far, has produced some impressive precipitation totals, combining rainfall and snowfall.

Northern Rhode Island and northern Bristol County, Massachusetts, got 8 to 10 inches of precipitation. Elsewhere, there was at least five inches of precipitation.

What’s still to come?

Some guidance is hinting that our storm pattern may remain active through February, and even into March. This doesn’t necessarily mean all snow, but our chances will increase.

In an El Niño pattern for New England, typically our winters are “backloaded,” which means better chances for snow and cold in February and March.
