Join the scavenger hunt with RI Walks Challenge

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Land Trust Council (RILTC) is encouraging people to get out and explore the state’s natural beauty.

For the RI Walks Challenge , RILTC teamed up with artist Greg Rebis to create 30 creature sculptures, which are hidden on walking trails around Rhode Island. Each one has a QR code that hikers can scan to track their progress and learn more about the area where it was found.

“This challenge not only encourages outdoor exploration, but also highlights the importance of the work that RI’s land trusts do to preserve our natural world for future generations to enjoy,” RILTC Executive Director Kate Sayles said.

For those who complete the challenge, the RILTC is giving away prizes from local businesses like Wright’s Dairy Farm, Knead Doughnuts, and the Providence Children’s Museum.

Since the challenge first started in 2021, more than 10,000 people have scanned the QR codes of at least one creature, according to the RILTC.

“It is a wonderful vehicle to explore Rhode Island. We definitely walked parts of the state that we would have never otherwise gone to,” said Dianna Shaw of Barrington, who finished the challenge.
