Gun legislation returns to the State House

Good morning, I’m Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

Life in East Providence has certainly changed.

December’s closure of the Washington Bridge’s westbound lanes sent reverberations across the region as everything from getting into Providence to getting out of your driveway, in some cases, suddenly started taking a lot longer. And now that the future of the bridge is in doubt, with a years-long replacement on the table, some are starting to wonder about their futures.

Does it mean moving? Will work schedules need to change?

As we near the two-month mark of the closures, The Journal’s Wheeler Cowperthwaite talked with residents and businesses about how they’re adapting and what comes next.

• Firearms were back to the forefront at the State House on Thursday as advocates for an assault weapons ban and safe-storage requirements for firearms gathered to lobby support.

In a packed room, the stories of loved ones lost were shared and the arguments for why these bills need to be passed.
