‘Severe weather outlook’ for Rhode Island includes potential tornado on Sunday afternoon

The National Weather Service is warning that severe storms could be ahead for Rhode Island this afternoon.

Damaging wind is the primarily threat, “but large hail and an isolated tornado is also possible,” the agency’s Boston bureau wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for all of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut until 7 p.m.

Southern New England has an “enhanced risk” of severe weather, rated at a 3 on a scale of 1-5, the NWS said on Sunday morning. That advisory covers the whole state except for Block Island, which has a “slight risk.”

A small craft advisory is in place for all Rhode Island coastal waters, the Rhode Island Sound, and the Block Island Sound. Southwest winds with gusts of up to 30 knots and 3-5 waves are expected.
