‘Emotionally spent’: Single-family house prices stay near $500k, with fierce competition

PROVIDENCE – When someone comes to real estate agent Stephen Antoni , looking to sell their house, he has one question: “Where are you going?”

“They say, ‘We’ll figure it out,'” Antoni said. “I say, if we put it on the market today, it’ll sell and the buyers will want to move in in 30 days. So, let’s think of that before putting it on the market, do you have a place to go? You don’t want to move in to your parents’ house, but will you consider it?”

Antoni, with Mott & Chace , is describing a housing market that has been majorly restricted since shortly after the onset of the pandemic, when people who owned homes started pulling them off of the market. That supply of homes for sale has never recovered.

The latest housing numbers, for August , paint a picture that is largely the same as it was the month prior, with median single-family house prices hovering around $500,000. In June the price was $494,000, in July $495,000 and in August, $491,000. The housing numbers were released by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors .
