Panel to discuss RI Education Commissioner’s contract renewal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A state panel will decide if Rhode Island’s education commissioner will earn a contract extension.

The State Council on Elementary and Secondary Education will meet on Wednesday night to review an evaluation of R.I. Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green and negotiate her contract.

Infante-Green has stated publicly she intends to stay in Rhode Island.

“I love Rhode Island. This is where my work is, and we’ve been doing really good work,” Infante-Green said in a Sept. 6 taping of Newsmakers .

According to state payroll records, Infante-Green earned $296,174 during the 2023-2024 fiscal year. No details of her proposed contract have been released.

Infante-Green took over as education commissioner in 2019 when her predecessor, Ken Wagner, left the department to join the Annenberg Institute at Brown University. The following year, the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) took control of the failing Providence Public School District.
