Salvation nears for constantly flooded homes

Good morning, I’m Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

I found myself drawn into the scenes from North Carolina this weekend and towns in the western part of the state found themselves dealing with devastating floods.

While Rhode Island has been fortunate to avoid such extreme flooding there are plenty of us that remember the floods of 2010 or even more recently the downpours in recent years that led to localized flooding at various locations throughout the state. And in some neighborhoods, flooding happens more frequently than others.

Among those are neighborhoods along the Pocasset River in Johnston and Cranston, but help could soon be on the way.

The Journal’s Alex Kuffner has the latest on the federal buyout program that will give homeowners a chance to leave their flood-prone homes, along with similar programs that could help more homeowners across the state.

• Across the country parrot surrenders are on the uptick and Rhode Island is no stranger to the problem. Fortunately, organizations such as Foster Parrots in Hope Valley and Rhode Island Parrot Rescue in West Warwick are here to help take them in. But it’s reaching a point where there’s only so much they can do.
