How do I vote early in RI? What’s the turnout so far?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In less than two weeks, people across the country will be heading out to vote for the next president and other elected officials.

If you won’t be able to make it to the polls on Election Day (or don’t want to wait in line) you have two options: turn in a mail ballot or take part in early voting .

But if you didn’t request a mail ballot before the deadline on Oct. 15, that leaves just early voting, which runs right up until Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Early voting is available in every municipality , mainly at city and town halls. Most will be open Monday through Friday, but a handful will have weekend availability, and the hours vary by location.

Data from the R.I. Secretary of State’s Office shows that as of 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, more than 53,000 Rhode Islanders have voted. Around 41,000 have done so in person, while more than 12,000 mail ballots have been received by the Board of Elections.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest turnout so far is in Cranston, where there’s a highly publicized mayoral race .
