The cold weather is a hot topic

Good morning, I’m Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

You don’t need to be told it’s cold outside.

Step outside to grab the mail and you’re probably running back into the house. It will also take a bit before you warm up again. Fortunately for many of us, we have a warm place to be every day. For the state’s unhoused, that isn’t the case.

It’s also becoming a hot topic in political circles.

The Journal’s Nish Kohli talks with those who need the shelter system and takes a look at the growing number of unhoused in the state, the lack of beds to provide comfort and why Gov. Dan McKee is taking heat over the subject.

Here’s what Nish learned.

• Police on Wednesday detailed the heartwrenching scene they came across on Jan. 3 when a family was found dead inside a West Greenwich home. The Journal’s Mark Reynolds reports on what police found.

• Testimony has begun in the case of a Massachusetts woman who was found dead in an icy Carbuncle Pond in 2022. The Journal’s Katie Mulvaney reports on the first day and testimony and an unusual twist that has become part of the proceedings.
