COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD)- A bill that would legalize the limited use of medical marijuana in South Carolina has been picked up by the state Senate again, continuing a years-long push by advocates to pass the legislation.
State senators voted 26-13 Tuesday to set S.423 for special order, fast-tracking it for debate on the Senate floor.
The bill, also known as the Compassionate Care Act , would legalize marijuana for medical use in South Carolina for patients with certain debilitating medical conditions.
Similar legislation passed the state Senate in 2022 but was ruled dead in the House due to a procedural challenge.
Medical marijuana is currently legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Davis claims his proposal would be the “most conservative medical cannabis bill in the country.”
Only topical, oral, and vaporized products — including, but not limited to, patches, oils, ointments, tinctures, and edible forms — would be allowed under the bill. Smoking and burning marijuana flower would not be allowed.
