Riley Moore Falls has been a cherished destination for visitors for generations.

Nestled by the banks of the Chauga River, Riley Moore Falls features an impressive 100-foot wide waterfall that cascades beautifully across the river. This stunning destination is a popular spot for hikers, kayakers, and anyone looking to enjoy a refreshing dip in the lagoon formed at the foot of the falls.
While the hiking trail to Riley Moore Falls is generally classified as easy, some visitors may find parts of the journey to be a bit tricky.

If you choose to park along the main highway—necessary if you’re in a regular vehicle or if the ground is wet—you’ll need to walk about half a mile down a forest road before arriving at the second trailhead that forks left into the woods. The trail descends initially, but be prepared for a strenuous uphill trek on the return journey, as you’ll be climbing for almost a mile. The hike features a total elevation gain of 347 feet.
This trek is both shaded and picturesque, and most hikers find the incline manageable.

Upon arriving at the waterfall, you’ll encounter a modest drop of around 10 to 12 feet that leads you to a beautiful sandy beach by the serene lagoon at its base. Just remember, what descends must be climbed again later.
However, before you think about making that ascent, you can relish a full day basking in the tranquility of this hidden beach nestled in the mountains.

Tucked away deep in the forest, this hidden waterfall remains untouched by large crowds due to its distance from the nearest road. The journey to reach it is a rewarding hike that culminates in a breathtaking view. As you approach, the powerful rush of the Chauga River cascading over the falls captivates your senses, with shimmering streams of water flowing gracefully across the river’s expanse.
Typically, the waters at Riley Moore Falls are remarkably clear, presenting a beautiful sight, especially after heavy rainfall when the scenery transforms.

The lagoon’s sandy floor adds to the enjoyment of discovering its beauty. Many visitors bring inflatable tubes, anchoring them to nearby trees as they leisurely float along the gently flowing water.
Others pack a picnic in a backpack and enjoy a delightful day, taking breaks to dip into the refreshing river throughout their adventure.

When you arrive at the main trailhead, you will encounter a forest service road that might tempt you into thinking you can drive a bit nearer to the falls.

If you own a 4×4 truck, you’re in luck! You can attempt the journey, but be cautious of potentially deep muddy patches on the road. If your vehicle doesn’t have high clearance, it might get stuck. If you choose to park on the main road, be prepared for a one-mile walk to reach the falls. However, if you have a high-clearance 4×4 and drive to the second trailhead, the hike is only about half a mile.
On a hot summer day in South Carolina, taking a refreshing hike is an excellent way to enjoy the weather, and Riley Moore Falls provides the perfect spot for a swim after your trek.
