A Stunning Sunrise Destination In The Palmetto State

Experiencing the sunrise from the open-air chapel in South Carolina is a memory that visitors treasure forever. Known as Pretty Place Chapel, this remarkable spot is perched on the edge of a cliff, offering breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Escarpment, located near the border between South Carolina and North Carolina.

Constructed in 1941 by Fred W. Symmes, the chapel bears his name and is an integral part of the YMCA Camp Greenville.

The quaint chapel features 16 aisles, lined with pews on both sides, and serves as a popular venue for numerous wedding ceremonies annually.

At the forefront of the chapel, a cross is prominently displayed atop a rock pedestal that rises 30 inches. This striking cross towers an additional eight feet above the pedestal and spans two feet on either side.

During the times when Pretty Place is not reserved for private events like weddings, guests often have the opportunity to arrive as early as 6 a.m. This early arrival allows them to bask in the tranquility of the morning, watching as the sun gently ascends above the horizon.

It’s hard to imagine a more breathtaking location in the state to witness a sunrise. Can you?

Nevertheless, it is situated on privately owned land that belongs to the YMCA Camp, and during certain seasons, it may frequently be unavailable due to weddings and other private events. (And yes, it is available for rental as well.)
