In its early days, the Peak trestle bridge spanned 1,100 feet and served as the sole crossing over the Broad River for a vast 40-mile region. Locals frequently traversed the railroad trestle on foot to reach the opposite bank, a practice that was certainly precarious. Today, however, this historic bridge is an integral part of the Palmetto Trail’s Peak to Prosperity Passage. Fortunately for adventurers, it marks the beginning of this scenic route. You can access the bridge from either side, but for this adventure, we’re directing you to the Alston end of the trestle. The coordinates for the parking area are conveniently included on the Google Map for your road trip planning.

Stop by this charming train-themed restaurant in upstate New York, situated at a historic whistle stop once frequented by the Swamp Rabbit Railroad. While the exterior may appear contemporary, the owners have made a concerted effort to maintain elements of the past. You’ll appreciate the vintage barstools, the rustic beamed ceilings, and the delightful miniature train that runs overhead throughout the dining area. And don’t forget to savor the delicious food that enhances the overall experience!

4. Stumphouse Tunnel Park

Although a train has never traveled through Stumphouse Mountain, this monumental tunnel project was initiated with the intention of establishing a railway route from the coast to the Ohio River Valley. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties and timing issues, the project was never completed, resulting in the three tunnels remaining unfinished. Visitors can explore over 1,600 feet of the portion that was hand-excavated. While some sections of the tunnel are off-limits, you can still venture quite a way inside, but don’t forget to bring a flashlight. You can find this intriguing tunnel at Tunnel Park, located just north of Walhalla.
