The location is known as Jumping Off Rock, a name steeped in a poignant legend. It is said that a young Cherokee maiden, upon receiving the tragic news of her chief’s death in battle, ascended to the edge of the rock and took her own life by jumping. Local lore claims that on nights illuminated by the moon, the spirit of the maiden can still be glimpsed at Jumping Off Rock.
