The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is looking for sources of fill material, also known as ‘borrow’, for a construction project on S.D. Highway 25. The project, starting in 2026, will stretch from U.S. Highway 212 to nine miles north. It aims to enhance the safety and functionality of the road through grading, shoulder widening, culvert replacement, and sight distance improvements.
The SDDOT is yet to find a source for the borrow and is now contacting local landowners. They are considering all potential sites within five miles of the project. Landowners will have the chance to review and approve the design for the borrow site before construction starts.
Landowners who agree to provide borrow will be paid for the material removed, any crop damage or loss of use, and revegetation if needed. After the borrow is removed, the site will be reshaped and the topsoil will be replaced.
The final approval of the borrow site will need the landowner’s agreement and signature. Those interested in discussing the process and potential compensation can contact Jeff Steen, SDDOT Aberdeen Region Materials Engineer.
