SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office has released its annual crime report, announcing that overall crimes reported in 2023 were down 2.57% from 2022.
In total, the number of reported criminal offenses in 2023 was 67,145 in 2023, down a bit from 68,917 in 2022.

Important among these was that the rate of serious crime (listed as homicides, sex offenses and aggravated assaults) in particular fell, registering 45,905 reports in 2023 as compared to 48,249 in 2022.
Diving a little deeper into these, there were 18 homicides reported in South Dakota in 2023, down from 22 in 2022. There were 340 forcible rapes in 2023, down from 419 in 2022. 2,081 aggravated assaults were reported in 2023, down from 2,190 in 2022.
On a per capita basis, this equates to 1.98 murders/100,000 people, 37.44 rapes per/100,000 and 229.2 aggravated assaults per/100,000.
One area where numbers increased were in the categories of DUI arrests and drug offenses.
