South Dakota voting system restored after Microsoft service disruption halts early voting

Some South Dakotans attempting to vote early might’ve had a longer wait than usual Friday after an internet hiccup.

The South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office confirmed in a press release that a temporary technical issue with their voter check-in system led to a statewide disruption of early voting.

The issue was caused by a Microsoft service disruption, the state wrote.

“Our office worked closely with both our vendor and Microsoft to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible,” Secretary of State Monae Johnson wrote in a press release. “Please rest assured that this temporary interruption in no way impacted the tally or processing of votes; ballots are securely stored and counted on Election Day.”

Minnehaha County Auditor Leah Anderson told the Argus Leader the voting system went down statewide at about 11:30 a.m. Friday.

In-person absentee voting was stalled due to the issue. Anderson reported long lines of voters forming throughout the county auditor building.
