SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Education is a large chunk of South Dakota’s budget each year.
KELOLAND News asked members of the executive leadership team about what bills can be expected in the upcoming legislative session.
“I think you’re likely to see bills regarding education, innovation and parental choice,” State House of Representatives majority leader, Scott Odenbach said.
“I think we need to really be focused on funding public education. We know that that’s been a priority over the years. As representative Odenbach mentioned, there have been discussions about where parents can send their kids to school,” State House of Representatives minority leader, Erin Healy said.
In the past two legislative sessions, a voucher bill has been introduced but failed .
Rob Monson with School Administrators of South Dakota says he’s confident a similar bill may be brought up again.

“The new twist that we keep hearing about and have had a few runs out in the last couple of legislative sessions are what you would consider a voucher program, which would be public money being used to fund a student’s school choice to do something other than public school,” Monson said.
