‘Impact will be felt for generations’: SD Congressional leaders react to Jimmy Carter’s death

South Dakota’s top leadership is reacting to the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at age 100.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, according to USA Today. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

U.S. Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds (R-SD), took to social media after the news, as did U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD), to share their condolences.

Thune, who was recently named Senate majority leader and is expected to assume the role next month, called Carter “a dedicated public servent and man of faith.” Thune has been a Congressional leader for the state since 2005.
