PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Pierre’s mayor says he expects word soon about when South Dakota can expect to have a new governor.
KELOLAND News asked Mayor Steve Harding what he knows about an inauguration ceremony for Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden.

The South Dakota Constitution calls for the lieutenant governor to “succeed to the office and powers” of the governor when the office of governor becomes vacant.
Governor Kristi Noem is the choice of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to be the next federal homeland security secretary. The U.S. Senate will consider her confirmation, possibly as soon as later this month.
The mayor of Pierre has traditionally appointed an inauguration committee each time that a new governor is preparing to take office.
There is nothing planned at this time, according to Mayor Harding.
“I have talked to the Governor’s office and they are discussing it and will get back to the city. Should hear something next week,” he said.
Rhoden and Noem are Republicans. The next primary elections for governor are in June 2026. So far no one has formally filed as a candidate.
