Collecting Water From Natural Springs an Appalachian Tradition in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, TN – In Appalachia and communities such as those in Eastern Tennessee, “city” water has not been widely available or even wanted as it is in areas with flatter land and more populous areas.

As modernization and infrastructure funding has reached more and more areas in Appalachia each year, more residents are discovering access to reliable and clean drinking water.

Driving through Appalachia in states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, one may see a truck hauling a tank of water or a truck bed full of water jugs.

A family would make it a regular activity whether it be every other day or weekly.

Most likely, those people obtain their water from a local filling station or in many cases, a natural spring.

It can be stated that some people actually prefer natural spring water over filtered public water.

Natural water springs are common in the Appalachian Mountains and in Tennessee with fresh water rolling off the steep mountains underground and finally finding a hole in the ground to spew out.
