NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Now that the Tennessee General Assembly is back in session, Democrats in Tennessee are once again hoping to enact stricter gun laws and increase penalties for certain gun-related offenses.
The measures face little to no chance of passing the Republican-led supermajority, but that hasn’t stopped Democratic lawmakers from filing dozens of bills they hope will do something about the rate of gun violence in Tennessee.
Rep. Bo Mitchell (D-Nashville) has filed new bills on firearm storage penalties, the definition of an assault weapon, and new taxes on the sale of firearms, to name a few. Here are some of the bills filed or set for new action in 2024.
HB2192
According to the caption text, HB 2192 would require a gun dealer to “ensure that 14 days have passed since the transaction was initiated by the purchaser before transferring a firearm to a purchaser.” Essentially, it imposes a mandatory two-week waiting period for all gun purchases.
