TN, VA medical group to pay $200k to settle alleged federal violations

KNXOVILLE, Tenn. ( WATE ) — A medical group with more than 30 clinics in Tennessee and Virginia will pay $200,000 in civil monetary penalties to settle allegations they violated the recordkeeping rules of the federal Controlled Substances Act.

The Department of Justice announced on Thursday that State of Franklin Healthcare Associates, which operates a multi-specialty physician-led medical group, agreed to pay the penalties to resolve allegations that it violated the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) in District Court in the Eastern District of Tennessee.

The CSA requires those who register with the DEA to make and retain records detailing how controlled substances are acquired, dispersed, and disposed of.

The allegations against State of Franklin Healthcare Associates (SOFHA) stated that between October 2020 and January 2023, the medical group failed to create or retain, or could not furnish, the required documentation. According to the DOJ, the allegations were that during the time, the documentation that could not be furnished included:
