Tennessee Introduces Choice Lanes to Reduce Congestion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee is embarking on a new transportation model with the introduction of “Choice Lanes,” high-speed toll lanes aimed at reducing congestion on Interstate 24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro. Traditional free highways will still be available.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the lanes, part of Gov. Bill Lee’s Transportation Modernization Act, will use dynamic pricing to manage traffic flow and offer drivers a faster commute for a fee.

“Choice Lanes are designed to provide a more reliable travel time for those willing to pay,” said Rebekah Hammonds,TDOT Community Relations Officer. “It’s about choice and flexibility for drivers.”

Unlike traditional toll roads, Choice Lanes will operate on a variable pricing system, similar to ride-sharing services, with tolls fluctuating based on traffic volume. TDOT officials said the goal is to create a more predictable travel experience for those who use the lanes, while also improving conditions in the general-purpose lanes by reducing congestion.
