‘A true American hero’: Korean War veteran’s legacy lives on through family as former POW laid to rest in Tennessee

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A generation of Korean War heroes are dwindling, but one prisoner of war dedicated his life to making sure stories like his are not forgotten.

With the recent passing of Middle Tennessee native Thomas Caroland, his family is taking up the torch of sharing his legacy.

News 2 attended his funeral and has more on the life of Caroland, a North Korean prisoner of war and a beloved father, grandpa, and great-grandpa.

“He was a true American hero,” Thomas Caroland’s son Ross said. “He said multiple times that if he had to do it all again, he would do it all again.”

“What defined him more was the love of his family and love of his county,” said Brian, Thomas Caroland’, Brian Caroland, expressed.’s grandson.

Thomas Caroland passed away on Monday, surrounded by family. Now, the Caroland family is ensuring his sacrifice and those of others like him are not forgotten.

“The Korean War is often called the forgotten war,” Ross said.
