Opinion: Child care costs are out of reach for many parents. We must solve this crisis

When Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory recently highlighting the unprecedented stress faced by parents in the United States, many parents wearily glanced up from their to-do lists and said, “We know.”

Raising children has always been an arduous task, but today it is fraught with more complications than ever, leaving parents exhausted.

Across the country — and especially in Nashville — there exists a true crisis for the 63 million parents living with children under 18, according to the U.S. Census, and Murthy has raised a warning flag for their anxiety.

Child care cost crisis is a problem all over America

The rise of gun violence, mental health issues, and the prevalence of screens are newer concerns about which all parents incessantly worry.

However, matters that used to be basic hurdles such as locating safe and dependable child care and budgeting to reflect the rising cost of raising children are seemingly insurmountable today, both of which make parenting all the more daunting.
