NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Although inflation has come down in recent years , a new study shows Tennesseans are still spending a big chunk of their paycheck on groceries.
According to ConsumerAffairs , grocery prices are taking a bite out of consumers’ incomes, especially in southern states.
To determine how much Americans in each state spend monthly on groceries, ConsumerAffairs reviewed an U.S. Census Bureau survey that asked about weekly food spending in major metro areas in Nov. 2022 and Oct. 2023.
Wonder why grocery prices are still high? So does the US government
“In terms of wages, households spent an average of 13% of their monthly income of groceries in 2023. That was a slight increase from 12% in 2022, the year price increases recently peaked and began to slow down,” the study said.
The study, which used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, revealed that Tennesseans spent approximately 15% of their monthly income on groceries alone in 2023, which is higher than the national average of 13%.
