Only one of the three Tennessee Senate seats representing Knox County was up for reelection this year, and Knox County voters reelected longtime Republican state Sen. Becky Duncan Massey over Democratic newcomer Domonica Bryan.
The Tennessee Senate’s 6th District covers south and eastern parts of Knox County. It’s been represented by a Republican since at least 2005. Massey captured more than 64% of the vote in unofficial returns.
Massey thanked the crowd surrounded by more than a dozen family members, some of whom previously served in state and federal offices.“It is just an honor to serve y’all,“ she said at a GOP election night watch party in downtown Knoxville.
Massey, 69, emphasized her record of bringing together colleagues on efforts like taking steps to secure a mental health hospital in Knox County.
Massey is the former director of the Sertoma Center and she’s been serving in the Tennessee Senate since 2011. Bryan, 39, is an investigator with the Department of Children’s Services.
