United Nations Petitioned to Intervene for LGBTQ Communities in Texas

The ACLU, GLAAD, and others accused the red state of carrying out a ‘systematic attack’ with a series of bills

Multiple groups are petitioning the United Nations to intervene in Texas over laws they argued in a letter are unjustly targeting LGBTQ residents in the southern state.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Equality Texas, GLAAD, and the Human Rights Campaign were all signed to an allegation letter sent to various experts within the United Nations.

The letter cites seven pieces of legislation out of Texas, including bills barring treatment like hormone therapies and puberty blockers for trans you, stopping DEI programs on college, and banning trans athletes from collegiate sports .

The groups said the recent wave of legislation out of Texas is equal to a “systematic attack.” The seven bills were just a fraction of the more than 50 pieces of legislation that has been submitted by lawmakers, the ACLU warned.

“Taken individually, the seven pieces of legislation discussed in this submission will disrupt the lives of LGBTQIA+ people of various ages and backgrounds,” the letter from the groups reads. “Put together, the Bills are a systemic attack on the fundamental rights, dignities, and identities of LGBTQIA+ persons that opens the gates for discrimination by both public and private actors.”
