AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Water Development Board reported that drought conditions in the Texas Panhandle and High Plains region remained steady at the start of February, while the new month brought another bout of substantial improvement for drought conditions across the rest of the state.
According to the TWDB’s “Water Weekly” report, the area of Texas impacted by drought conditions as of Feb. 5 dropped to 23% from 27% the previous week, continuing the recent trend of remaining some of the best drought conditions the state has seen since March 2022. The report marked Texas experiencing a 16% decrease in its area impacted by drought since late December. The most recent map from the TWDB showed that Texas drought conditions stood at 23% at the start of February 2024 compared to 65% three months ago and 53% one year ago.
The TWDB noted that since the end of December 2023, parts of East Texas have seen a three-category reduction in drought intensity, reaching its lowest drought impact level since mid-June 2023.
