Texas Arrests Expose Intersection of Right-Wing Bloggers, Militia Activities, and Border Tensions

In a recent incident that has sparked controversy and debate, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) apprehended Celeste April Sparks and Jerry J. Pena-Ahuyon, two individuals who self-identify as “independent journalists” and operate under the banner of Beyond the Masks SA, a right-wing advocacy group. Their arrest occurred near Eagle Pass, Texas, as they were touring the area with members of the United Patriot Party of North Carolina, a group described by police reports as a militia. This encounter sheds light on the complex and often contentious intersection of journalism, activism, and law enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sparks and Pena-Ahuyon were stopped by DPS officers after a surveillance operation conducted by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) plane reported migrants possibly being held at gunpoint by armed individuals. Upon inspection of their Mercedes SUV, officers discovered a bag containing a white powdery substance, marijuana, and THC edibles, along with a Smith & Wesson gun in Pena-Ahuyon’s possession. This discovery led to their arrest on charges of drug possession, while Pena-Ahuyon also faced charges for unlawful carrying of a weapon.
