Texas Building Military Base On Border

Texas Governor Greg Abbott says the state will build a “Forward Operating Base” on the Rio Grande to house thousands of Texas troops as part of its “Operation Lone Star” border security mission.

The announcement was made Friday during a news conference at the 80-acre site on the Rio Grande – where construction has already begun – six miles south of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass.

The Governor’s announcement says the border base will accommodate 1,800 Texas soldiers, with the ability to expand to 2,300.

The base camp will feature a 700-seat dining facility, a recreation center, laundry facilities, WiFi access, individual rooms for soldiers starting at 118 square feet, chaplaincy programs, and medical and psychological health facilities.

The camp is needed to house a growing number of State National Guard troops from Texas as well as troops from Georgia, Utah, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Florida, and Indiana whose governors also recently announced deployments to the Texas Border (and, as I reported earlier today, Missouri is also preparing to send troops there).
