Wet weather moves into Utah for the week of Christmas

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) – It’s the first full week of winter! We kick off this holiday week with temperatures about 10-15 degrees above average.

The bottom line? Get ready for the possibility of a white Christmas! Multiple waves of slushy wintry weather will impact the state this week.

Northern Utah will have daytime highs reach the upper 40s and low to mid-40s in higher terrain. Central and southern Utah will run warmer with highs in the low to upper 50s. Apart from a few morning valley sprinkles and mountain flurries in the north, we are looking at partly cloudy skies as high pressure builds back and brings quiet weather – but not for long.

By late Christmas Eve on Tuesday, we’ll start seeing moisture fill in across the region and a cold front will drop temperatures. It’ll be a race between the cold front and Santa Claus as both are forecasted to reach the Beehive State at midnight on Christmas Day. This is set up to be a valley rain mountain snow event at first, but there’s a decent chance it transitions to valley snow for Christmas morning. As of Sunday night, there’s roughly a 50/50 chance that valleys will see measurable snow.
