The rise of single women homeowners in Virginia

Single women own more houses in Virginia than single men. Overall homeownership is now majority female.

According to Axios, this matters a lot because sixty years ago, women couldn’t even get a credit card or a mortgage without a male cosigner. Now, the share of single women homeowners eclipses that of single men.

Census data shows that 13.5% of homes in Virginia are owned by single women, compared to 9.3% by single men. Virginia ranks 10th in the nation for the share of single lady-owned real estate.

Mortgage platform Maxwell

The mortgage platform Maxwell started tracking applicants’ gender and marital status in 2021. In 2023, it shows that solo women mortgage applications made up 18% of the market. Maxwell’s annual Single Women Home Buyer Report shows that one in three women bought houses because they were in a stronger financial position than men.

Maxwell’s report also shows Gen Zers and millennials made up the largest share of single women mortgage applicants in 2023.
