Sweet Tea has divided the North and South in Virginia

Northern and Southern Virginians differ about sweet tea

There is nothing like a delicious glass of iced sweet tea and most people I know agree. I was surprised when a relative told me that once you leave Virginia and head north this drink is no longer an option in restaurants. He said when he asked for this Southern delight in New York and Canada people stared as if he had 3 heads.

The blog True Virginia goes a step further stating that you are no longer offered sweet tea in Northern Virginia and that in Richmond you have to ask for it. The blog suggests Northern Virginians are distancing themselves from being a Southern and becoming more Midatlantic and North Eastern.

Once upon a time, sweet tea was popular everywhere below the Mason-Dixon Line but that seems to be changing. For now, this delicious staple of the Southern States is still being offered in Southwest Virginia and further South.
