Handguns on school property are prohibited
Earlier this month WSLS 10 revealed that an employee from William Fleming High School in Roanoke was arrested for having a gun in the seat of his vehicle. The weapon was found during a routine security check of the parking lot.
It is a class 6 felony to have a gun anywhere on school property unless you are a law enforcement official. In Virginia, there may now be an additional penalty for having a handgun visible in a vehicle if Governor Glenn Youngkin approves it.
A handgun visible in a vehicle will be costly
Virginia Mercury is reporting that Senators in the Commonwealth have just passed a bill that imposes a $500 fine on anyone who leaves a handgun in a vehicle where it can be seen.
Sen. Dave Marsden, D-Fairfax, says this bill is a light touch to deter guns in public places. He added: “We cannot have our vehicles here in the commonwealth act as vending machines for firearms,” The bill must now go before Governor Glenn Youngkin and there is concern that he could veto it.
